He also served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brent_East_(UK_Parliament_constituency)\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none; color: #092f9d;\">Brent East<\/span><\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1987_United_Kingdom_general_election\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none; color: #092f9d;\">1987<\/span><\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2001_United_Kingdom_general_election\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none; color: #092f9d;\">2001<\/span><\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/h6>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica; color: #1a1a1a;\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none;\">Born in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lambeth\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none; color: #0a006d;\">Lambeth<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_London\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none; color: #0a006d;\">South London<\/span><\/a>, to a working-class family, Livingstone joined Labour in 1968 Ken went on to become the head of the GLC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica; color: #313131;\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none;\"><br \/>\nThe GLC began as an effort to rationalise London-wide planning, London in the 1950s could be a grim place. Large swathes of residential streets remained derelict after being bombed out during the war and the houses still standing were often squalid and overcrowded. Thick fog hung over the city and roads were dirty and dangerous\u2026\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">The GLC under Ken Livingstone was an an administration that successfully enacted a historically unprecedented radical program of successful and popular socialist policies, including massive investment in job creation, reducing public transport fares, the declaration of London as a nuclear free zone, saving over a million pounds annually spent on utterly cometic and pointless defence plans nik e hiding under a table before the bomb went off).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica; color: #1a1a1a; background-color: #f7f7f7;\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none;\"><br \/>\nArguing that politics had long been the near-exclusive preserve of white middle-aged men, the GLC began an attempt to open itself to representations from other groups, principally from women, the working-class, ethnic minorities and homosexuals but also from children and the elderly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica; color: #1a1a1a;\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none; color: #313131;\"><br \/>\nThey initiated a raft of <\/span><span style=\"font-kerning: none;\">measures to improve the lives of minorities within London,\u00c2\u00a0 this included funding for groups such as London Gay Teenage Group, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/English_Collective_of_Prostitutes\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none; color: #092f9d;\">English Collective of Prostitutes<\/span><\/a>, Women Against Rape, Lesbian Line, A Woman&#8217;s Place, and Rights of Women, and<\/span><span style=\"font-kerning: none;\">\u00c2\u00a0the Ethnic Minorities Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica; color: #1a1a1a;\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none;\"><br \/>\nUnderstanding the clear evidence that the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metropolitan_Police\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none; color: #092f9d;\">Metropolitan Police<\/span><\/a> was an institutionally racist organisation, he appointed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Boateng\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none; color: #092f9d;\">Paul Boateng<\/span><\/a> to head the Police Committee and monitor the force&#8217;s activities.<\/span><span style=\"font-kerning: none; color: #092f9d;\"><sup>[100]<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-kerning: none;\">\u00c2\u00a0 the police he remarked are highly political organisation, noting that when canvasing police flats at election time, you find that they are either Conservatives who think of Thatcher as a bit of a pinko or they are <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Front_(United_Kingdom)\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none; color: #092f9d;\">National Front<\/span><\/a>.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-kerning: none; color: #092f9d;\"><sup>[100]<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica; color: #313131;\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none;\"><br \/>\nAn outspoken republican he politely refused an invitation to Diana and Charles Windsor\u2019s wedding and the list of righteous achievements simply goes on and on, and of course\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica; color: #1a1a1a;\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none;\">Just as today our overwhelming right wing press rabidly attacked such egalitarian policies, snowflake like and steeped in patriarchal white privilege they moaned that such policies only served &#8220;fringe&#8221; interests, and also like today their criticisms often exhibited overt <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Racism\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none; color: #092f9d;\">racist<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homophobic\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none; color: #092f9d;\">homophobic<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sexism\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none; color: #092f9d;\">sexist<\/span><\/a> sentiment\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica; color: #313131;\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none;\">The GLC ended after an extended and fierce face-off between perhaps two of the most popular and divisive figures in British politics: Margaret Thatcher and Ken Livingstone, with Thatcher shamelessly abolishing the London\u2019s Council she simply could not defeat by democratic means, with it\u2019s formers headquarters, county hall still facing parliament from the south bank as an irony free monument to her neoliberal policies, the building now a Macdonalds,\u00c2\u00a0 a tourist trap aquarium and of course a hotel for the fifty rich.<\/span><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; font-family: Helvetica; color: #313131;\"><span style=\"font-kerning: none;\">This list of adventures and landmark achievements goes on and on, including two tenures as London mayor (the first time as an independent winning against Tony (call me Maggie) Blaire\u2019s official labour candidate, he as been <\/span><span style=\"font-stretch: normal;
